ITALY
COURSE/TOUR
Liguria
and Cinque Terre,
one of the most beautiful regions of Italy.
SEPTEMBER 3-14, 2010

Lago di Como |

Vernazza |
Don't miss this phenomenal tour
of Italy and 6-day furniture/cabinet course re-creating
Renaissance styles, taught by Italian master artisans,
Carolina D'Ayala Valva and Walter
Cipriani. We will visit Lago di Como (Lake Como)
(maybe we will get a glimpse of George Clooney, who owns
a villa there), Sestri Levante, Portofino, San Fruttuoso,
Porto Venere, and Le Cinque Terre (the Five Lands in Liguria,
including Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola,
and Riomaggiore).
We are honored to have Carolina D'Ayala Valva and Walter
Cipriani teaching this course, a unique painting
adventure that will take you back to the charm
of the 15th-century with its European decorative techniques.
You will learn, step-by-step,
how to design and paint a Grotesque, as well as the "color-fusion
technique," to create the most amazing designs for
your clients. These techniques can be used on chests,
doors, mantelpieces, and any kind of furniture. Carolina
will also surprise us with a few Italian finishes on wood
and other surfaces.
Grotesque is a style of decorative
painting consisting of an unusual combination
of leaves, flowers, fruits, and other plant elements mixed
with fantastical animals (griffins, sphinx, centaurs)
and human figures, all twisted and connected to each other
in a capricious way that has nothing to do with the order
of nature.
Carolina D'Ayala Valva
was born in Udine, Italy, and later moved with her family
to Brazil. After obtaining her Master's in Architecture
and Town Planning at the Catholic University of Goias,
she moved back to Italy to take advanced courses at the
European Craftsman Training Center for the Conservation
of Architectural Heritage in Venice. There she met and
married Walter Cipriani. In 1996, Carolina and Walter
opened "L'Artelier" ("the studio")
in Rome, where they have taught students from all over
the world about design and painting. Carolina is also
the author of the book, The Art et Techniques
de la Grotesque (Edition Vial).

See Beautiful
Italy
Le Cinque
Terre (The Five Lands)
is a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera noted
for its beauty. Located in the Liguria region of Italy
to the west of the city of La Spezia, in the Gulf of Tigullio,
it includes five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza,
Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The coastline, five
villages, and surrounding hillsides are all part of the
Cinque Terre National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
(its natural heritage is considered to be of outstanding
value to humanity). Part of its charm is the lack of visible
"modern" development. Paths, trains, and boats
connect the villages; cars cannot reach it from the outside.

Portofino is known for its shopping
and as the resort of the rich and famous (Beyonce
Knowles and other entertainers come during the summer!).
It is a picturesque, half-moon shaped seaside village
with pastel houses lining the shore of the harbor. Portofino
has shops, restaurants, cafes, and luxury hotels. Portofino's
crystalline green waters reveal a myriad display of aquatic
life. A castle sits atop the hill overlooking the village.
There are also opportunities for hiking, diving, and boating.
Now you have a "taste" of what
you will experience. Enticed?
Please join us for the experience of a lifetime!
See you in Italy!!
Ciao!
Dont be left out
of this fabulous opportunity!
